COMPANY HISTORY
Ryba Žilina, spol. s r.o. was founded in 1992 as the successor of the former national company Ryba, which operated during the former regime in three Slovak cities – Bratislava, Košice, and Žilina.
Today, Ryba Žilina is the largest fish processor in Slovakia, building on a rich history and experience in the fish industry in this part of Slovakia, formerly the Kingdom of Hungary. Fish farming, fishing, and fish trade flourished here for centuries. In 1892, the first fish processing factory in Žilina was established under the name “Žilina factory for smoking and preserving fish.” The plant later ceased to exist. In 1924, however, a new fish canning plant started operating in Žilina by Elemír Langfelder. After ownership changes and production expansion, it was registered in 1932 as Eletko – a factory producing fish cans, mustard, and bryndza. The factory gradually expanded its premises on today’s Hviezdoslavova Street, where fish products have been produced continuously from those beginnings until today.

The Ryba company itself, with its first production plant in Bratislava, was established in 1942 during the war. It was granted a monopoly position in fish supply, becoming the exclusive importer and buyer of marine fish, canned products, and other fish goods. In 1971, the national company Ryba became part of Slovak Frozen and Fish Industry. Today’s Ryba Žilina, spol. s r.o. became an independent company in 1992. In 2013, former production of the national company Ryba Bratislava was also merged into it.
After the war, several national administrators changed in the factory. By decree of the Commissioner of Nutrition dated 11 Sep 1949, the factory was nationalized and transferred under the management of the national company Ryba. The Ryba company itself, with its first production plant in Bratislava, was established in 1942 during the war. It was granted a monopoly position in fish supply, becoming the exclusive importer and buyer of marine fish, canned products, and other fish goods. In 1971, the national company Ryba became part of Slovak Frozen and Fish Industry. Today’s Ryba Žilina, spol. s r.o. became an independent company in 1992. In 2013, former production of the national company Ryba Bratislava was also merged into it.
In 2013, the PRETO group became the majority owner of Ryba Žilina, spol. s r.o. Thanks to this connection, we became a significantly stronger player on the Slovak food market, not only in production but also in logistics and distribution. We gained a sister logistics company, PRETOLOG. This is also why we are now the largest producer of fish and delicatessen salads in Slovakia.
In 2013, the PRETO group became the majority owner of Ryba Žilina, spol. s r.o. Thanks to this connection, we became a significantly stronger player on the Slovak food market, not only in production but also in logistics and distribution. We gained a sister logistics company, PRETOLOG. This is also why we are now the largest producer of fish and delicatessen salads in Slovakia.
